Overview

This page details the programming of the TiVo remote to control multiple TiVos and to control your TV and A/V receiver. It also describes shortcuts that can make it faster for you to navigate TiVo by describing the secondary functions of many buttons have.

Programming the TiVo Remote Control for multiple TiVos

If you have 2 TiVos in the same area, you'll want to make sure each one is controlled by its own remote (otherwise you can accidentally do all sorts of accidental things on the other TiVo.)

Understanding Remote Address 0:

  • Remote Address 0 is the universal and default address for all TiVos.
  • A TiVo Remote set to Remote Address 0 will control any TiVo, whether the TiVo is set to Remote Address 0 or any other address.
  • A TiVo set to Remote Address 0 will respond to any TiVo remote, whether the remote is set to Remote Address 0 or any other address.
  • You must change the TiVo box Remote Address and the TiVo Remote Control Remote Address for all units in the same room, because any remote or TiVo set to Remote Address 0 will still respond to/control every box/remote.

To change the Remote Address on a Remote Control

  • Press the TiVo button and the Pause button on the remote at the same time and hold them for 3 seconds (until the red light on the remote turns on)
  • Press the number on the remote control number keypad of the remote address you want to use

To change the Remote Address on your TiVo

  • Browse to the Info screen on your TiVo (varies by by TiVo model, but generally TiVo menu -> Settings -> System Information or similar)
  • Press any button on the remote control; this remote must already be set to the desired Remote Address
  • Somewhere on in the list of System Info, there is a line for Remote Address. This should now show the new Remote Address.
  • To change the Remote Address back to 0 (or any other address), reprogram the remote and then press any button while in the system info screen to change the address.
  • If there are two TiVos in the same room and they are both set to Remote Address 0, be sure to unplug one before setting the remote address for the other. Otherwise, both TiVos will switch to the System Info screen at the same time and the Remote Address will be change for both of them.

Programming the TiVo Remote to Control Other Devices

The TiVo Remote can control your TV power, TV volume and mute or A/V Receiver volume and mute, and TV input. The TiVo setup menu provides complete details on how to do this and the codes to try for your brand of TV.

  • Navigate to the Remote Control Setup Page (varies by TiVo model number, but generally TiVo menu -> Settings -> Remote Control)
  • Follow the on-screen instructions for programming the remote by enabling the programming function, entering the code for your device, and testing that the code works
  • For your TV Power and Channel buttons: Press the TiVo button and the TV Power button on the remote at the same time and hold them for 3 seconds (until the red light on the remote turns on), enter the code for your TV, test that the Power and channel buttons work, you're done.
  • For your A/V Receiver Volume buttons: Press the TiVo button and the Mute button on the remote at the same time and hold them for 3 seconds (until the red light on the remote turns on), enter the code for your A/V Receiver, test that the Volume buttons work, you're done. You can't control TV volume if you enable A/V volume control
  • For your TV input button: Press the TiVo button and the TV Input button on the remote at the same time and hold them for 3 seconds (until the red light on the remote turns on), enter the code for your TV, test that the input button works, you're done. When you setup your TV channel buttons, the TV Input may have been setup properly, but if it was not you use this step.

TiVo Glo Remote Special Features

The TiVo Glo remotes are compatible with all TiVos, but they offer a few additional features versus the standard TiVo remote: - Button backlighting when the remote senses that the room is dark - The ability to learn codes from other remote controls - On the back of the remote, the bottom half has ribs for improved grip and to make it easier to make sure the remote is being held right-side up.

Turning the Glo Remote Backlight Feature Off/On

The TiVo Glo remote control has an automatic backlight feature. There is a sensor on the front of the remote (near the IR emitter) that detects when a room is dark enough for the buttons to be difficult to see. When the room is dark, the remote activates the backlight when any button is pressed.

If you want to deactivate the backlight to improve battery life: - To turn the backlight off: press and hold the TiVo and the Thumbs Down buttons at the same time until the red light blinks three times. ~ To turn the backlight on: press and hold the TiVo and the Thumbs Up buttons at the same time until the red light blinks three times.

Learning Codes from other Remotes with the TiVo Glo Remote

The TiVo Glo remote is a learning remote and can learn codes from other remote controls. If a command can not be found using the standard built-in codes found in the TiVo Settings menu, you can program the remote by following these steps:

  1. Position the TiVo remote and the other remote so that they are pointing at one another, approximate 4 inches apart.
  2. Press the TiVo and the Select buttons at the same time and hold them for 3 seconds until the red activity light stays on.
  3. On the TiVo remote, press and release the button you want to program.
  4. On the other remote, press and release the button that you want the TiVo remote to learn.
  5. If the code is learned successfully, the light on the TiVo remote will blink 4 times. If the code was not read successfully, the TiVo remote light will very quickly blink 10 times. If this occurs, repeat the previous 2 steps.
  6. Repeat the steps above to program the appropriate buttons. When finished, press the TiVo button to exit learning mode and return to normal operation.

- On the other remote, press and
